One popular Native American craft item are turtle shells. You can utilize authentic turtle shells to help create some fantastic Native style crafts and southwestern decor. The turtle shell is very unique, and provides a lot of character to your crafts.
What is it made of? A turtle shell is composed of hard, bone plates that are covered by a number of scutes. This may not be of much help if you don’t know what a scute is. These are little plates that are made from keratin, basically the same substance your fingernails are composed of. You would probably think these scales protect the turtle, but that is not the case. It is actually the bony layer beneath the kertain scutes that provide the durability and shape of your average turtle shell.
Different species of turtles will have different patterns on their shells at time. Sometimes you even get bright colors that can add a certain beauty to the typically green turtle shell.
